Our Mission
The mission of the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Medical School Department of Neurology is to provide a comprehensive learning environment for future neurologists, perform groundbreaking research in the field of neurology, and to provide cutting-edge care for patients who cross through the thresholds of our clinical sites.
In order to fulfill its mission, the department relies on the assistance of many important support staff that keeps this department running.
The department keeps a fresh approach to the field of Neurology, always remembering our motto:
“Neurology – it’s not rocket science (it’s slightly more complicated).”

Dr. Sean Savitz
First patient enrolled in stroke stem cell study
For the first time in the United States, a stroke patient has been intravenously injected with his own bone marrow stem cells as part of a research trial at the Medical School.
“It’s still very early in this safety study, but this could be an exciting new therapeutic approach for people who have just suffered a stroke,” said Dr. Sean Savitz, assistant professor of neurology and the study’s lead investigator.
