Multiple Sclerosis Program at Mischer Neuroscience Institute

A collaboration between Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, the Multiple Sclerosis Research Group (MSRG) Clinic has established a track record of cutting-edge care. The medical staff uses state-of-the-art techniques in the diagnosis, evaluation, management and treatment of adult patients with demyelinating disorders.

Physicians at the clinic are at the forefront of investigator-initiated research in oral protein medications for the treatment of MS, immune regulation in MS, infections as a cause of MS, MS-related MRI findings and MS-related cognitive impairment. The MSRG Clinic also conducts investigator-initiated and pharmaceutical company sponsored clinical trials on novel agents for the treatment of MS and clinical research using imaging studies to investigate the evolution of MS pathology. Organized in 1983 under the leadership of Dr. Jerry S. Wolinsky, the physician team has participated in more than 25 clinical trials of potential novel symptomatic and disease-modifying therapies. Several of these trials were pivotal in supporting FDA approval of treatments currently available for MS.

    Scope of Expertise
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Demyelinating diseases including neuromyelitis optica, transverse myelitis, and optic neuritis

Evaluation and Treatment

We see patients in all stages of MS, from the earliest symptoms through established disease. Many of our referrals are for patients with minimal symptoms. The team uses state-of-the-art MRI facilities, capable of advanced spectroscopic and diffusion tensor imaging with tractotomy to assist in determining if these symptoms are related to MS or another form of neurologic disease.

Once a diagnosis is made, Clinic physicians employ the most advanced treatment options available, including injectable immunomodulators, immunosuppressives and agents used to treat debilitating symptoms of MS, such as fatigue and bladder dysfunction. We are experienced in the appropriate use of aggressive therapies, sometimes required for severe cases. Therapeutic goals are driven by the maintenance of function and focused on maintaining patients at the highest level of function possible. Our treatment philosophy is grounded on the early identification of disease and early use of immunoactive agents to prevent the progression of disease. All medical regimens are individually constructed based on the stage of illness.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation is an integral part of a patient’s treatment plan. In order to optimize patient outcomes, we work closely with physical and occupational therapists to provide services for adults who will benefit from the coordinated and specialized rehabilitation services. These services are provided at the Neurorehabilitation Program at the Mischer Neuroscience Institute and Memorial Hermann|TIRR. Collaborating with Referring Physicians Throughout the evaluation and treatment process, we keep referring physicians informed about patient progress. After a patient’s office visit, referring physicians will receive a summary that includes the initial diagnosis, pending tests and treatment options.

For urgent consultations, please contact the Memorial Hermann-TMC page operator at 713.704.4000 and ask to page the neurologist on call.
